Conversation

The observer spoke about Nantucket and its natural charm and beauty he has known since the 1990’s. Over the years, he has noticed how the land has become more populated and built up. However, he believes the island has preserved the island effectively and hopes it continues to be preserved in the future.

About This Place

Historic Appearance

In the late 90's, the landscape was beautiful, natural, and not over built. There were many beautiful natural settings throughout the island including the ocean, nature trails, and bogs. The observer did not feel as if the island was a very crowded place, even during the summer months when the population of Nantucket grows substantially. The Land Bank has become an instrumental way in which Nantucket strives to maintain its historic beauty and charm.

Changes over Time

The island has become more built up over the years. More housing has been put up throughout the island due to a much higher demand, especially during the summer months. This has led to some political disagreements on the island concerning year-round housing. Some people encourage the construction of year-round housing while others are more interested in preserving the landscape and natural beauty of Nantucket. Further, there has been a substantial amount of erosion on the island within the time period the observer has been familiar with the land. The observer described how the "Land Bank" works to conserve the island and prevent too much construction, even as property demand increases. The Land Bank owns both of the public golf courses, beach property, parks, and common areas throughout the island.

Historic & Current Activities

The observer used to do a lot of biking on the island on the many bike paths present as well as catching snapper turtles at a small, hidden pond. He also valued the beauty of driving on Great Point, the northern most point of the island. Here, he enjoyed driving past the dunes along the beach for quite awhile, seeing very few others around. Today, the observer is able to do many of the same things that he did back in the 90's. He still enjoys going to the beaches, exploring new areas, and biking around the island.
